The room is full of men, standing and sitting, with mugs ofale in hand, and cigars and pipes billowing smoke.

FRANCIS PAYNE, a local black planter, addresses the group,with a book in his hand.

Laughter rises and subsides.

The group responds with a mixture of reactions. They areinterrupted by MRS. SCARBOROUGH, who first signals herhusband.
