The courtroom is awaiting the four-member white jury, andJURY FOREMAN’S decision. RICHARD JOHNSON, Virginia’s fortythree-year-old brother, stands aside the family barrister.

The COUNTY ATTORNEY stands nearby.

Present in the courtroom are Mary, Virginia, Elizabeth,Charles Scarborough, John Casor and his two sons, allformally dressed.

The jury is seated. The NEW CHIEF JUSTICE is an unfamiliarface.

A buzz vibrates through the courtroom. The Johnson clan isdumbfounded.

Virginia has lost her composure. She bolts upright.

The chief justice puts his hand up to the county attorney.

The courtroom erupts. The chief justice hammers his gavel.

John Casor stands and places himself between the court andhis family.
